I am currently reading the ‘reply’ – a book written decades later by Eliade’s lover, then a 16 year old girl. Sens that stand in my way and find Maitreyi, and make some good material foar a novel, but one with a very happy ending.

How deep, complex and unintelligible they seemed to me. For many years, Maitreyi Devi was not aware that the story had been published. But the translation in Bengali is not upto the mark.
It is not just an interesting love story between a European and an Indian girl, but also an opportunity to think about philosophy, communicating across cultures and nithts clash that sometimes replaces dialogue. Wonder if it still is today.
